Lil Wayne kisses Baby. Is rap becoming more tolerant of subtle effeminate behaviour and homosexual undertones?

Again, I may be late w/ this one but “Better late then never” or as Senor West says, “You should be honored by my lateness.”

One of my favorite songs right now is the “They Know” Remix by Shawty Lo a founding member of D4L (who brought us Laffy Taffy). Let me first get this out before I proceed. This song is a exemplary display of BAD RAPPING. But that’s what I like about it so much, it’s a fun song and an even funner song to make fun of (“funner“, write that down, you’ll wanna use it later). But what strikes me more than the song’s comical nature (intended or accidental), is the fact that the artist’s voice is so effeminate, it’s actually the textbook example of a stereotypical homosexual’s voice. If you haven’t heard it, do yourself a favor and listen/watch this…please.

Now, just follow me for a second. I’m straight. I like women, not dudes. I have no problem w/ gay folk, their behavior, lifestyle, or none of that; however I still think that shit is nasty. I also still think that when I see a grown ass man skipping, that shit is hilarious. This dude sounds like the old (and very gay) pedophile on Family Guy. HELLO! But I digress…

Nowadays the lyrical content of rap/hip-hop (and lots of other genres too) is so homophobic, it’s ridiculous. However, in the past few years, there’s been so much gay shit in rap, it frikkin puzzles me as to how the scores of homophobes in the industry haven’t lashed out, condemned, and otherwise attempted to rid their craft from that which is “poisoning it” in their eyes. I hear the phrase “Nigga, you gay” and “No homo!” used almost as often as I hear the word “nigga” used. Yet in the same minute or two, I see people doing the Dougie, the D-town Boogie, that Shawty Lo dance, and other flamboyant ass dances. I like the dances (some of them), but they look gay as hell. I’m not saying that I will or will not do the dance because of this fact, but I recognize this as a fact. That shit looks gay. I’m just being honest w/ myself.

When Lil’ Wayne aka Weezy F Baby (i don’t wanna know what the “F” stands for) was mmmm mmmm kissin’ another man WHO is not related to him, no one really said anything. I mean if are gonna kiss another man, then that dude needs to be in your family and even then it’s still just nasty. Now I’m not saying that Lil’ Wayne should have been crucified for that, but I don’t think that I’m alone when I say that I just thought that kissing another man on the mouth was rap career suicide. I think only 3 or 4 people made a comment about it, but then that was it. I know it’s not outta fear, cuz Wayne isn’t Jay-Z, KRS, Nas, or Eminem when it comes to battling, which makes me wonder…maybe the rap scene has changed.

Has the rap game changed so much that effeminate ass dances and men kissing men is now “acceptable”? If so, does this acceptance represent progression of the genre and/or the growing tolerance of alternative lifestyles, or is this backsliding? Or is the homophobia and hatred of (male) homosexuality, commonplace in rap music, an overcompensated front for the secret sexuality of those too scared to come out the closet?
