Soul Food or Slave Food?
“Chittlins? Fuck Nah, I don’t want no more.” – Omar Twist
I usually try to stay away from “angry black man” posts or related websites. Sure lots of people have alot to be angry about, but there’s so much to be glad ’bout…right? So when someone pointed me to “StuffBlackPeopleHate.com”, I was reluctant to go. I went anyway and browsed till I found this article about the connection between “soul food” and slavery.
Normally, we at Afrothought.com kinda stray away from talking about our personal lives, but my African ass thinks that 1/2 the things on that list are downright gross. I’m glad that I got the diet that I got. Hell, a lot of these foods on the list have never EVER seemed appetizing to me*. Who knows, maybe I don’t get it, and for that, I’m thankful. But it’s still and interesting piece. An excerpt and link are provided below….
We all know what slave food is – it’s food made from that parts of the animal that make even native Chinese people say “dude, that’s fucking sick. It’s the shit our slave ancestors were forced to eat because all they’d be given after their “masters” got done raping, eating, kissing on the mouth, and doing whatever else it is to animals that white people just love to do.
I can’t believe that today, despite all the social, cultural, and economic strides black people have made over the years, so many of us still insist on eating that grimey shit. I’m pretty sure that 50% of the reason MLK ever marched anywhere is so his children wouldn’t have to eat pig intestines ever again.

. . .but {southern} white people aslo eat chittlins. Saw it on the TravelChannel. Ole boy was cooking chittlins in his backyard while roasting an entire pig on a rotisserie. That is not the say — So if white people do it, why cant we – - just pointin out that people eat shit cause they like it. If you look at the origin of many foods´[of the lighter persuasion] you will find a lot were constructed out of poverty. So I mean. . . come on. . . And also on the Travel Channel, Ive seen some nasty looking shit they make from odd parts of odd animals in Chnese countries, but 20 bucks says that nasty looking shit tastes hella good. . . and yes, goat intestines in pepper soup goes HARD!!
I’m sorry. I don’t really f*ck with the chitterlings (aka chittlins). Actually, i’m not sorry for that at all. I smelled them sh*ts being cleaned (no pun intended) before I ever got around to tasting them. And i’m sure we all know you got to trick folks into trying chittlins. Ain’t no way you can tell somebody what chittlins are (pig intestines) and let them see/smell the rigorous cleaning process necessary and expect them to jump at the chance to chomp chomp on that. I mean… that much cleaning alone is a red flag. Not to mention the history behind how we came to eat them. Granted i tried them and they were alright. Surprisingly good knowing the real deal. Still thought, it never is nor ever will be my idea to eat chittlins. I’d have to be … i dunno…completely restricted from all other food and REALLY hungry. Go figure.
I like soul food……
Greens
Mac&cheese
Cornbread
Yams
oxtail stew
A few more too, but I do not care for the other weird and nasty unhealthy slave food.
Soul food is good food.
Slave food/soulfood it’s all the same i remember eating that shit when i was young know you can’t pay me enough money to eat that shit . Black people we need to wake up and eat to live not live to eat let the devil eat that shit and die and rot.
