Couldn’t we make it the rest of the year without a Fail?

(BBC News) – The US football star who scored the winning touchdown in this year’s Super Bowl faces criminal charges after shooting himself by accident.

Plaxico Burress, who plays for the New York Giants, has been charged with possession of a loaded firearm, which is illegal in the city.

If found guilty he could receive a prison sentence.

He is the latest player to be arrested, further damaging the reputation of the National Football League NFL.

Earlier this year Plaxico Burress was a key member of the New York Giants team which won the Super Bowl, the most prestigious prize in American sport.

He caught the winning touchdown pass in a narrow victory over the New England Patriots. In September he signed a $35m £23m contract which would keep him at the Giants for the next five years.

But his future as a player is now in jeopardy.

He faces a possible prison sentence after shooting himself in the leg by accident in a Manhattan nightclub. In New York possession of a loaded hand gun carries an automatic jail term of three-and-a-half years.

The city’s mayor, Michael Bloomberg, said there should be no exceptions.

“I don’t think anybody should be exempt from that and I think it would be an outrage if we didn’t prosecute to the fullest extent of the law particularly people who live in the public domain, make their living because of their visibility,” he said. “They are the role models for our kids.”

Bad behaviour

The episode has highlighted an embarrassing trend for the National Football League.

Many of the incidents have been alcohol related, but a growing number of the offences concern firearms.

The NFL has implemented steps designed to protect its integrity. There is a code of conduct. Players who have broken it have been suspended without pay.

But it does not seem to have halted the pattern of bad behaviour amongst some of the League’s high profile stars.

The situation prompted one online bookmaker to post odds on which NFL player would be the first to get arrested this season.

The Dallas Cowboys star Adam “Pacman” Jones was the favourite. He has been arrested six times since he joined the NFL in 2005.

It seems players appearing in court or going to jail could become more the norm than the exception.

(Source: BBC NEWS | Americas | NFL star Burress faces gun charge.)

Editorial:

Well, I guess we only did ask til November 5th before brothas/sistas resumed doing stupid ish. From my understanding the Burress shot himself in the leg whilst trying to keep the gun from falling through his sweatpants. ::sigh:: But hey, lesson learned. I’m mean hopefully he doesn’t have to shoot himself to learn all his lessons but still I imagine the logic has been etched in his brain (or at least his leg).

Which brings me to my real beef with the situation; Michael Bloomberg. Mayor Bloomberg feels Burress should be prosecuted to the full extent of the law.  You know, the whole “set an example” BS mixed with the ‘anti-celebrity privilege’ sentiment. Now the ‘full extent’ would put the brotha in jail for 3 1/2 years. Is that really necessary? Burress already embarrassingly shot himself in the leg. I think that plus a hefty fine and some community service should be punishment enough. This is on top of injuring one of those two legs he needs to maintain his livelihood as a star NFL wide receiver. I mean dude is set up to be ridiculed for the rest of his life. Hell, I’m sure more people know him for this attempt at a Darwin Award rather than his Super Bowl win. And I’m sure Bloomberg had nothing but praise for Burress when he was winning New York that Lombardi trophy but now he is quick to put a noose up for the brotha. Dang. Remind me to take any praise from that Mayor with a grain … shoot… a gallon of suspicion. Bloomberg acts like the brotha tried to shoot him or something. I mean it’s cool to play politics and all, but not with jail time. Bad form, Smee. Bad form.

You think you would get more sophisticated and clever comedy from an Ivy League educated comedian. Swing and a miss for David Alan Grier and Comedy Central once again.

When I first heard that Comedy Central was going to start airing a show called “Chocolate News”, I got worried. All I could think about was “I just hope it’s responsible”, meaning I hope they don’t go all in and bet the farm on racial stereotype jokes the whole season (if it lasts that long, God forbid). My initial feelings seemed to contradict a belief of mine that I wrote about in a previous article on Afrothought.com about being angry and falling into the Angry Black Man stereotype. Basically, I feel people shouldn’t have to limit their expression and/or creativity for fear of self-fulfilling some kind of racial/ethnic stereotype. Although I still feel that way, there is a line drawn where self-expression and emoting becomes reckless and irresponsible.

Despite my initial reaction, I decided to tune into “Chocolate News” and see for myself what all the hype was about on TV and online. The show promised to be as edgy as Chapelle’s Show while retaining the same level of sophisticated humour and faux credibility of The Daily Show with Jon Stewart. Seeing as how these two shows were the both the funniest and my favorite shows on TV, I was somewhat excited to tune in and see if the once genius David Alan Grier managed to make comedy magic again.

What I saw was a bastardized version of Mind of Mencia on crack. Not only is Chocolate News not funny in the slightest, but it focuses on solely racial stereotypes and prays that the jokes turn over. I’m not against racial stereotypical jokes, but what made Chapelle’s Show so frikkin’ hilarious is that the racially motivated jokes were clever and took a completely different approach to the same issues as well as brought new ideas on screen as well. Furthermore, Chapelle’s Show did not bank solely on racial punchlines, there was actual substance there.

To make matters worse, Grier has been working on this show for years, battling back and forth with Comedy Central executives (who were hesitant in producing another Black show after Chapelle’s impromptu departure), to ensure the content of Chocolate News was responsible.

“Are you laughing with me because you get the joke, or am I giving you license to laugh at me in a derogatory, dehumanizing way?” says Grier [while considering content for the show].

And this is the best you can do? I guess this is the level of material Comedy Central approves from of black comedians or maybe Grier set his own bar low as all hell. This is quiet possibly one of the worse show’s I’ve seen in a long time. I wish I had two sets of hands so I can give this show four thumbs DOWN! I respect Dave Chapelle even more for leaving Comedy Central before the network turned his show into Chocolate News…or Mencia’s crap show. Fail.

No doubt a lot of attention has been on Sarah Palin. But in recent weeks, the Alaskan Governor has had her share of goof ups that make the GOP look really bad.

When it comes to making their running mates look bad, she makes it look easy…

No doubt a lot of attention has been on Sarah Palin, potentially the first-ever female vice president, but in recent weeks, the Alaskan Governor has had her share of goof ups that make the GOP look really bad. You have to wonder if they thought, “This will work as long as she doesn’t talk”. Unfortunately for them, the American people (the smart and not-so-smart ones alike) are demanding more from their candidates and the GOP has found it hard to keep Palin from speaking.

In her first interview….ever (ok, lemme stop), the Alaskan governor met w/ Charlie Gibson and clearly wasn’t prepared to answer questions that weren’t really all that hard…to answer. Not to answer correctly, or popularly, but to just answer. When asked what the Bush Doctrine was, Palin ever-so ungracefully tried to get Gibson to tell her what that was. When asked if the Ukraine and Georgia should join the UN and be attacked by Russia should we attack or go to war w/ Russia, Palin responded by saying we shouldn’t “second-guess” the decision to attack….Russia.

The GOP immediately realized they had a problem on their hands and booked Palin on two more “safe” interviews with Sean Hannity and another with Katie Couric. Of course we all know the Hannity interview was GOP friendly but what they didn’t expect was for Couric to stump this woman. Among major gaffes, like Palin being unable to cite any examples of McCain’s actions to push for more oversight in his tenure in the Senate, this happened..seriously:

COURIC: You’ve cited Alaska’s proximity to Russia as part of your foreign policy experience. What did you mean by that?

PALIN: That Alaska has a very narrow maritime border between a foreign country, Russia, and on our other side, the land– boundary that we have with– Canada. It– it’s funny that a comment like that was– kind of made to– cari– I don’t know, you know? Reporters–

COURIC: Mocked?

PALIN: Yeah, mocked, I guess that’s the word, yeah.

COURIC: Explain to me why that enhances your foreign policy credentials.

PALIN: Well, it certainly does because our– our next door neighbors are foreign countries. They’re in the state that I am the executive of. And there in Russia–

COURIC: Have you ever been involved with any negotiations, for example, with the Russians?

PALIN: We have trade missions back and forth. We– we do– it’s very important when you consider even national security issues with Russia as Putin rears his head and comes into the air space of the United States of America, where– where do they go? It’s Alaska. It’s just right over the border. It is– from Alaska that we send those out to make sure that an eye is being kept on this very powerful nation, Russia, because they are right there. They are right next to– to our state.

I have a cat. I played with dogs before, and I’ve watched a space shuttle fly into orbit. According to Palin’s train of thought, not only am I a veterinarian but I’m an astronaut too.

I’m gonna need you to study at least a LITTLE bit for a test. I don’t blame the GOP at all for keeping her mouth shut. Smile and look pretty, because as soon as you open your mouth….FAIL.

Oops. Sorry, that wasn’t it. I must have gotten them confused. Here is the actual interview.

Since when did surviving against a menacing monster in a title match earn you Championship Gold? You had to beat a champion to become a champion, not survive.

It’s been quiet around here for the past few weeks. But just when you start to have faith in people’s judgment, someone fucks it up. This past weekend, I went to go watch UFC 86: Jackson vs. Griffin, a fight that I knew would be an extremely interesting matchup. Although, with the media portraying this thing like David vs. Goliath, I had my initial worries.

Forrest Griffin is basically like frikkin’ Spiderman or Hillary Clinton. The dude will not die. He will bleed his ass off, get destroyed w/ right hands, powerslams, and combos, fall, smile, and get back up. So everyone knew going into the fight that Rampage was gonna catch his ass more than a couple of times to keep his ass down, and of course…Griffin would fall down and SOMEHOW get back up. It was clear, if Griffin was gonna win, he’d have to chop Rampage down piece by piece and take alot of punishment in the process. And that’s exactly what happened, Griffin’s performance was extremely impressive. He kept moving, he chopped away and severely damaged Jackson’s left leg, and survived massive right hands to the temple and even got his ass powerbombed.

But that was just it. Griffin survived. He didn’t knock Jackson down once and although he hurt his leg in round 1 and dominated round 2, tha’s pretty much all Forrest Griffin did that night. Rampage landed some killer head shots, got the knockdowns and the slams and survived (those damn leg shots) himself. Although his performance wasn’t at all like it’s been in the past, Rampage held his own as well against an opponent who, as far as I’m concerned, can bleed his ass off, but cannot die. So when the fight went to a decision, we all knew the following facts:

Rampage came in the champion ; Griffin the Challenger

In the 5 Round bout, Griffin won round 2, hands down, and pretty much round 5 (maybe)

Rampage didn’t dominate as everyone predicted

Griffin survived massive blows to the face (somehow)

“…by unanimous decision, your winner aaaaaaaaaaaaand…”

Silence in the sports bar….

“…..NEW Light Heavyweight Champion, Forrest Griffin!”

WTF? Since when did surviving against a menacing monster in a title match earn you Championship Gold? And the last time I checked, you had to beat a champion to become a champion. As Rampage said:

“I feel like if you’re the champ, somebody got to beat the champ. But it was unanimous. I’m not a judge.”

Rampage was visibly disappointed, and even Griffin himself shrugged his shoulders like “WTF? Tha’s retarded!” Many’ll quote Rampage’s remarks from the post fight interview where he said “I mean he just basically whooped my ass!” as proof that Griffin earned that belt, but tha’s Rampage. He’s not afraid to eat his words and take his hat off the victor (regardless of circumstance) all in the name of sportsmanship.

We all know Griffin is a crybaby. I don’t mean that w/ any disrespect, I like the kid ALOT. But when he wins, he cries, screams, runs around, and rolls on the ground. When Forrest won on Saturday, he was quiet as all hell. The UFC judges are on crack. This fight was a Cinderella story, a David vs. Goliath, and if the fight went to decision, they knew that it was gonna be handed to Griffin. The story just sounds too phenomenal on paper. Just read any review online about that damn fight. They’ll call it the greatest fight in the history of the UFC and gas it up like that. It was a good, solid fight, but no all-time classic.

The UFC rules and scoring system are ass, and although it’s the top-dog of the MMA (in the US at least), the system is grossly inconsistent. These are the same judges who called Rampage’s fight with Liddell almost immediately after Rampage rocked Chuck w/ the right hand, but let Chris Lytle bleed his ASS off for over 3 minutes that same night. The human body only has so much blood. Peep the picture on the left. Yes, tha’s ALL his blood on the floor, and yes, there was alot more in the ring than that picture can show.

Sidenote: Ya boy Chris Lytle was a G for that, he clearly didn’t have a healthy amount blood in his body to function, and was still landing combinations on Koscheck who made the mistake of tryina go easy on his bloodied opponent. Lytle definitely earned Badass of the Week runner-up for that.

Although I was rooting for Rampage to win the fight, I really like and admire Griffin’s tenacity. I just hate to see fighters win off some bullshit. At least he had the good sense to know that it was crock of B.S. So congrats (kinda) to Forrest Griffin. I didn’t want him to win it this way, but if there’s a rematch he has alot more to prove and show. Either way you look at it, Griffin was the night’s big winner, and as for the UFC Judges: FAIL.

It’s quiet. A little too quiet.

So I had in mind who Failed this week, but on second thought their shortcomings weren’t that crucial. In fact, their perspective follows a predictable line of logic they have been up to for months. Also, most of it revolved around Hillary again (and two Fails is beating a dead horse – where did this saying come from, who was out beating dead horses?). Whether it be Bob Johnson’s “please baby please” urging for Senator Obama to select his favorite blonde as VP or the millions (::like The Rock fans:: “and millions”) of people who are seriously considering voting for McCain just because Haterade didn’t seal the deal, AfroThought is beyond wasting a fail on them. However we’ve mentioned a larger looming darkness… (“Darkeness is spreading”).

Thankful as we are, it has been at tad long since the last Black embarrassment. You know the moment i mean. You hear a news report about some fool whose blunder made it to the national stage and all you are thinking is “Please don’t be Black; please don’t be Black, please don’t be … d*mn D*mn D*MN (shaking Good Times style)!!” Sure enough. Now you’re hoping there is some angle that this brotha’s actions were understandable but of course there isn’t. Not even close. Like the DC sniper. For the remainder of history brothas can no longer go… “somebody sniping folks? Mayn, white folks are crazy.” That there was a stereotype you could have left alone. A glass ceiling window, basement window (with bars over it), that was perfectly fine in tact.

So who’s it going to be? More so… when? If possible can it hold off ’til December? And Mr. Embarrasment can you not be famous? As in, all you celebrity’s and public figures stop f*ckin’ up for the next six months. I know that’s alot to ask. I know you it pains you to go through everyday knowing you are passing up perfectly good moments to throw your life away. But please, just give us til December. Now, why am I so paranoid? Well, think about it. We’re doing pretty well this year. Last thing i can really think of was Vick and that was late ’07 really so that doesn’t count. Did the Source Awards pass already? I know we have the BET awards later this month. How about we ride this thang on out? There are plenty of dumb ninjas out there waiting to be an embarrassment to themselves, their family and their people. How about we just be cool? That’s what we do. Ain’t a day I’m not proud of how cool we can be. Let’s just bank on that real quick. At least til December or even the start of ’09. After that there inauguration, do you. Alright, then. Ready… break.

I was hoping it wasn’t gonna come down to this. I’ll flat out say, I didn’t vote for Hillary. Even though I’ve been quoted as saying, “Man, I hate that b***h!”. I really don’t. Everyone knows that the Clinton’s are a proud family that don’t take shyt from nobody, but there has to be a point in time where enough is enough.

This past week, Senator Clinton, when answering the question “Why are you still staying in the race?”, made references to her husband’s June “win” and (unfortunately) Robert F. Kennedy’s June assassination just two weeks before the 40th anniversary of that tragedy. Check it out…

The danger I saw in Clinton’s stubbornness was visible to me shortly after her competitor cleaned up on “Super Tuesday” and swept her ass under the rug in the “Potomac Primaries”. Afterwards, she seemed to stagger in her speech and appeared unprepared and irrational. In those debates, she tried to counter with some horrible analogies and incredibly weak arguments and desperately tried to reach for any kind of ammunition that would stop the bleeding and would hide her inability to match wits with her opponent. To me it just seemed that she was crumbling under pressure, and not carrying herself very “presidential”. I’m thinkin’ to myself, “Damn, if she can’t deal w/ pressure now…”.

I don’t/didn’t really have problem w/ this chick but the moment I knew’d been coming happened yesterday. I don’t think this is some hint to a malicious plot on anyone’s life, I don’t even think that she’s really hoping for the worst. I just think that her ambition has blinded her so much that she’s not even concerned about what she says and how it comes off, guilty or not.

The fact of the matter is that the implication is there, that “I’m sticking around cuz anything can happen between now and then”. I’m not even gonna talk about the fact that back when Bill was running for office, the primary dates and convention calendar was very different than it is now. I’m not even gonna talk about that bullshit ass “apology”, that ended up turning into her rambling…very..very…slowly.

Look! If your a high-level politician, one that I would probably want to vote for, I’m gonna need you to be more careful than this. I could go on and on, but I’ll just let my boy Olbermann finish this post for me, I’m tired…

You know you’re having a bad day when Chris Matthews of MSNBC’s Hardball makes you look like a damn fool on national TV. The particular “bad-day-haver” I’m talking about is Kevin James, a right-wing radio talk show host out of Los Angeles.

First of all, lemme say that I’m not I’m not the biggest fan of Chris Matthews as he makes the worst analogies EVER. He’s one of those guys that you have to wonder, “How the hell did this guy get a show?” So when this guy chops you to frikkin’ shreds, you just Fail.

I know this post is kinda late, but I’ve talked about this so much since I saw this last Thursday that I felt obligated to write about it (or was is Wed.?).

This is a prime example of how uneducated pundits operate off of trigger words and speak before they think…or read. I mean, I can’t blame him TOO much for not preparing for a interview w/ frikkin’ Chris Matthews, the guy who said:

If you want to play a game, go to where it’s played and find a way to get in. Things happen when you get in the game.

But if you’re a political pundit, I’m gonna need you to know a lil something about World War II.

The clip is a lil noisy, but entertaining nonetheless. Oh yeh, and if you don’t know what Chamberlain did, it’s not your fault either. American history classes (in high school) don’t teach you shit anyway. Besides, you’re not the one arguing about WWII on TV. Tha’s just not a good idea, and you don’t have to be a genius to figure that one out.

What Neville Chamberlain did…
