Badass of the Week: Usain Bolt

August 21, 2008 by The Gentleman · 1 Comment

World Record Holder Usain BoltThat’s right, I said it!

Having set the World Record in both the 100 meter and 200 meter races, Usain “Lightening” Bolt would already be a contender for Badass of the Week. However it was the manner in which he won his Gold medals at the 2008 Beijing Olympics that is most badass. And even more so considering the brief backlash he faced. Read more

Turntable: Prominent playback technology used when music was good.

“F#@k what you heard!”

Often asked what i’m listening to when not performing or all too eager to share when listening, I, The Gentleman, have compiled a list of tracks that I hope you (all) have heard or will go find. Read more

The Joke’s On You!

The Joker

In a time where villains just aren’t respected anymore, something last week arose from the dust. Something incredibly sinister, something so vile, that you just had to respect it. There will never be another Jack Napier (if that’s even his name) projected on your screen again? Why? Because Heath Ledger nailed the role…on his first try. I mean it takes alot to outwit Jack Nicholson. And let’s give credit where credit is due. Nicholson nailed the Joker role in the first batman movie, but Ledger, pretty much took the gold in The Dark Knight. Don’t expect any future movies featuring the Joker because after you watch Heath’s stellar performance, you’ll never wanna see the intelligent D.C. comic book jester ever again. Read more

Badass of the Week: Venus Williams

Venus Williams wins 5th Wimbledon titleActually go ahead and say both Williams sisters.

This week saw the Williams sisters battle their way down to an all-Williams final at Wimbledon. However, it was Venus who claimed her fifth Wimbledon title over younger sister, Serena, who still holds more major Grand Slam titles than her big sister, 8-7. Though criticized for sloppy matches when facing each other in the past, observers say the sisters were in rare form this past Saturday. Read more

Lil’ Wayne Sells One Million

Lil Wayne frolics in air on TVUm… congrats?

Your favorite raspy rapper has gone platinum in one week. Selling one million copies since its June 10 release “The Carter III”, Wayne’s sixth album, gives him the best debut so far this year. The last album to sell one million in its debut week was “The Massacre” by 50 Cent. No album in 2006 broke 800,000 copies sold in its first week out. Kanye West’s 2007 effort “Graduation” was a mere 50,000 shy of the platinum mark selling 957,000 in its first week despite the competition from Curtis (no pun intended). Read more

Badass of the Week: Megatron

June 12, 2008 by The Prophet · Leave a Comment

Who said they have to be real?

Don’t be fooled by the charming exterior, this guy’s a badass if I’ve ever seen one. Megatron, the leader of the Deceptions and the main antagonist of almost every incarnation of the Transformers canon. What set this supervillain apart from just about every single villain in cartoon history is how unsettling it is that a cartoon villian can be so real and envoke the same kind of ruthlessness seen in live-action R rated movies. He wasn’t insane, he wasn’t misunderstood. He was smart, violent and very much focused or f***ing anyone up that screwed w/ him. If transformers bled, then Megatron’s hands would be floating in a river of it. Read more

Badass of the Week: Gina Carano

June 2, 2008 by The Genius · Leave a Comment

This past weekend, I lay back and watched Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) and to my surprise I see that one of the main events on the night’s card are women! Somehow I missed when women started competing in MMA and was expecting to see a “match” that was absent of intensity (women’s boxing) and as anti-climactic as the WNBA. Read more

Badass of the Week: Aung San Suu Kyi

Aung San Suu Kyi

“I wish somebody would!”

So alot of cats talk about being revolutionary. But Ms Aung San is actually doing it. Even more badass is she is not hiding about it. Now i know i don’t know the entire politics of the situation, but i’ve read enough to understand that the Junta don’t take no mess. (Remember the Saffron Revolution crackdowns.) In fact, up until recently they didn’t take anything; criticism, surveys, protests, aid, time for the people - you name it. Read more

Badass of the Week: Kimbo Slice

Kimbo Slice

That’s right, Kimbo f*ckin’ Slice!!

Now, there are some cats you know you’d rather not fight if you can avoid it. Sure you’d try if you had to but you know you wouldn’t win. Like Mike Tyson… he has made it clear he wants to eat your children. Maybe it’s that slight bit of crazy that puts a dude into that category. For instance, Kimbo Slice. Read more

Badass of the Week: Barack Obama

Obama Hope Stencil

Had to wait for the primaries…

And then i had to wait for the spin consensus. I mean you got to give this brother props on patience alone. Every other week something is trying to get in his way. Somebody is trying to talk down on him. And SOMEBODY is trying to act like she is the better candidate, knowing good and well she fell off.

This week though, he is the democratic party’s “likely presidential nominee” according to the dude who was all set to be Vice President in 2004. He has also taken the Super-Delegate endorsement lead; not to mention holding the pledged delegate lead and primary lead. All he needs now is for his nomination rival to make some disastrous blunder than even her most secret of ‘arm-twisters’ can’t clean up. But that wouldn’t be as much fun as making people admit that he just plain won, rather than she lost.
